Of the 918 Spyders built, only three wore the livery known as Psychedelic Design. It recalls the swirling paintwork that Porsche's chief designer, Anatole Lapine, drew for the Martini Racing 917 LH that Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen drove to second place at Le Mans in 1970. Two of the 918s went to the United States. The third, serial number 680, was the only one delivered to Europe: a Weissach package car painted to sample in Ferrari's Rosso Corsa with white and silver swirls, white magnesium wheels, silver brake calipers and Indian Red leather piped in Bianco Leda. Its first owner collected it at Zuffenhausen and kept it in Switzerland, with servicing at Porsche Service Center Gstaad, and RM Sotheby's offered it in January 2024.
The details of this model point to that car. It is red with white swirls outlined in silver, on white wheels with pale calipers, and the cabin is red with white piping and carbon trim. The Swiss number plate is from the canton of Bern, with Gstaad printed beneath it. Large black 8 roundels sit on the bonnet and doors, with a small Martini roundel on each rear wing. The roof panels can be fitted or left off, as the photographs show. The etched plaque on the white leather base reads Limited, one of 12. It is built at 1:18.
