Singer Vehicle Design was founded in Los Angeles in 2009 by Rob Dickinson, formerly the frontman of the band Catherine Wheel, and its name honours the Porsche race engineer Norbert Singer while nodding to Dickinson's own past as a singer. The aim was an ultimate air-cooled 911, drawing on the best of the whole air-cooled era. Each car starts as an owner's 964-generation 911, stripped to bare metal and rebuilt with carbon-fibre wings, bumpers, bonnet and engine lid, and the 964's shorter bonnet gives way to the long one of the early cars.
This one is finished in a deep burgundy metallic that flares to bright red where the light hits it. PORSCHE is lettered in gold along the doors and across the engine lid, and the five-spoke wheels in the Fuchs style have gold centres, polished rims and red calipers behind them. The filler cap sits out in the open on the bonnet. The engine lid lifts to show the flat-six with its six mesh-topped intake trumpets. Inside, the cabin is black, with gold eyelets in the seat cushions, a drilled three-spoke wheel, drilled aluminium footwell plates and an orange-faced rev counter in the Singer manner. It stands on a black base edged and stitched in red, and the plaque carries the Singer Vehicle Design signature and the edition, one of 20. IVY builds it at 1:12.
