Porsche unveiled the 904 in Stuttgart in November 1963: Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's low coupé, a glass-fibre body bonded to a steel box-section ladder frame, with the four-cam Fuhrmann flat-four of 1,966 cc and 180 hp mounted behind the driver. It was called Carrera GTS because Peugeot held the rights to three-digit names with a zero in the middle, and 106 four-cylinder cars were built so it could race as a homologated GT. Its greatest day came early. At the Targa Florio on 26 April 1964, with the works Ferraris absent after the FIA refused to homologate the 250 LM as a GT, Antonio Pucci and Colin Davis drove 904-005 to outright victory over the Sicilian mountain roads, and another 904 finished second.

CMC's #86 is in silver with a green band across the nose, blue #86 on the doors, lid and tail, and a Stuttgart registration plate on the rear panel. The front lid opens on the fuel tank and spare; the tail section swings back on hinges that copy the original, uncovering the Fuhrmann engine with its full wiring. The doors open with sliding windows onto velour-covered seats and a wood-rimmed wheel, and the wipers carry real rubber blades. CMC builds it at 1:18, from 922 parts.
