For nearly two decades the Mercedes-Benz 600 was the car in which the powerful were driven. Shown at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1963 and built until 1981, it ran to 2,677 cars, most of them short saloons and Pullmans. The Landaulet, offered from 1965 with a folding hood over the rear compartment, was the rarest of all, with just 59 made. Presidents and monarchs from Tito to the Shah of Iran owned 600s, and a Landaulet built for Pope Paul VI served the Vatican for some twenty years before retiring to the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This is the long six-door Pullman version, three doors to a side, with the rear hood folded to open the passengers to the sky.
CMC models it in medium blue over grey leather and wood trim, with a black fabric hood that genuinely folds. All six doors open on working exterior handles, as do the bonnet, revealing the 6.3-litre V8, and the boot; the rear compartment has two folding jump seats and a wood-faced centre console, and each wheel is held by five nuts behind a magnetic star hubcap. A telescopic aerial, flag poles and a tool kit are included, and the plates read S-M 600. Built from more than 1,230 parts, it is made by CMC at 1:18.
