Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, Silver with Blue Interior

Of the nine 300 SLRs built for 1955, two were rebuilt as closed coupés, and this is the first of them: chassis 0007/55, known as the Blue for its upholstery, trimmed like a road-going 300 SL in blue leather with tartan seat facings. Beneath the long, low body sits the racing car's three-litre straight-eight, inclined at 33 degrees to keep the bonnet line down, with direct fuel injection and desmodromic valve gear; the exhaust leaves through the right-hand flank. Built with the 1956 endurance season in mind, it lost its purpose when Mercedes withdrew at the end of 1955, and served instead as the team's practice car at Kristianstad and Dundrod before going on to demonstration and press duties. Its sister, the red car, sold in 2022 for €135 million; the Blue has stayed with Mercedes-Benz and is on permanent display in the museum in Stuttgart.

This CMC edition shows 0007/55 without race markings, on W22-6962 plates front and rear. The gullwing doors open with pivoting window panes, the bonnet lifts on its support rod over the engine with its ancillaries, wiring and plumbing, and the boot carries two spare wheels. Inside are blue tartan seat facings, leather trim and a wood-rimmed wheel before a full set of gauges. The wire wheels pair aluminium rims with stainless-steel spokes and removable centre-lock nuts.
