Nicola Materazzi engineered the F40 out of Ferrari's 288 GTO Evoluzione programme, and the timetable was short: the project began on 10 June 1986 and the finished car was shown on 21 July 1987. Its 2,936 cc twin-turbo V8 made 478 PS at 7,000 rpm and 577 Nm at 4,000 rpm, 78 PS more than the 288 GTO, and the extra power needed a new tyre, so Pirelli developed the P Zero specifically for it. At its launch the F40 was the fastest, most powerful and most expensive car Ferrari had offered for sale.
Here the whole car is done in one colour. The pale turquoise blue of the body carries on inside, over the bucket seats, the three-spoke wheel, the dashboard, the instrument binnacle and the centre tunnel, broken only by red harnesses, carbon weave on the door panels and floor, and the yellow prancing horse badges on the wings and wheel. The split-rim five-spoke wheels are silver, and the V8 sits under the slatted engine cover behind the cabin. The white leather base, edged in red stitching, carries a plaque with the car's specification and an edition size of 26. It is built at 1:18.
