Vittorio Jano designed the D50 for Lancia in 1954 around a compact 2.5-litre V8 that served as a stressed member of the chassis, set off-centre to keep the car low and flanked by pannier fuel tanks. Alberto Ascari put it on pole on its debut at the end of that season, but after his death in 1955 Lancia, short of money, handed its racing cars and assets to Scuderia Ferrari. Ferrari reworked the car for 1956, moving the fuel into a tank behind the driver, fairing in the sides and routing the exhausts through them, and with it Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1956 World Championship. In all, D50s won five of their 14 World Championship Grands Prix.
This is CMC's standard 1956 car: the short-nose D50 in plain red without race numbers, carrying Scuderia Ferrari shields. Built from 1,379 parts, it has a detachable, lockable engine cover over a fully plumbed and wired V8, a hand-made stainless-steel grille, an oil cooler ahead of the radiator, metal suspension with a De Dion rear tube and transverse leaf springs, and bundled four-pipe exhausts emerging ahead of the rear wheels. The cockpit has a leather-covered seat and head-rest, a wood-rimmed wheel and a small windscreen, and the wire wheels have stainless-steel spokes, Englebert tyres and centre-lock nuts with handed threads. CMC builds it at 1:18 as a hand-assembled metal precision model.
