At first sight the 288 GTO can pass for a 308 GTB with broader shoulders, which is close to how it came about. Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina worked from the 308's shape, while Nicola Materazzi led the engineering. Where the 308 carried its V8 across the frame, the GTO turned it lengthways, using the space the 308 had given to its boot, and the wheelbase grew. The body widened over bigger tyres, with flared arches, deeper spoilers and four driving lamps set into the grille, and the rear spoiler and the slanted vents behind the rear wheels were borrowed from the 250 GTO of 1962. Ferrari unveiled the finished car at the Geneva Salon in March 1984.
White is not a colour any 288 GTO wore when new, since the factory painted them all Rosso Corsa. On this model it lets the body's lines read without distraction, from the louvred bonnet vents to the black rear bumper and the twin round lamps either side of the GTO script. The flag-style mirrors, the thin black line along each flank and the polished five-spoke wheels are reproduced, and the cabin is black, with pleated seat centres. The car is mounted on a tan leather base with contrast stitching, and its plaque, made in the shape of the GTO's nose with four lamps, gives the edition as one of 49.
