When Ferrari unveiled the 288 GTO at the Geneva Salon in March 1984, demand quickly outran the plan. The car existed to meet Group B homologation, which called for 200 road cars, and Ferrari had intended to build only that many; 272 were completed before production ended. Every one was built with left-hand drive and painted Rosso Corsa, with no other colour offered. Buyers took delivery of a twin-turbocharged V8 mounted lengthways behind the cabin, with a claimed top speed of 189 mph, under initials last used on the 250 GTO of 1962.
Red is the one colour Ferrari offered on the 288 GTO, and this model wears it over black lower details. The front carries four driving lamps in the black grille band and a small prancing horse badge on the nose, and the louvred bonnet vents, the flag-style mirrors and the polished five-spoke wheels are all modelled, along with the three slanted slots behind each rear wheel. Inside, the black seats have red pleated centres. At the rear, the GTO script and prancing horse sit between the twin round lamps, with two pairs of tailpipes below. The car rests on a tan leather base with white stitching, and its plaque, in the shape of the GTO's nose with four lamps, gives the edition as one of 99.
