Walk round the back of the Mille Miglia Concept and the symmetry breaks. Instead of conventional tail lamps, BMW ran a single strip of LEDs across the tail in a gentle Z-curve, an asymmetric layout it argued would make the brake lights register sooner with following drivers. The body follows the same idea, so each flank reads differently: a classic two-box fastback seen from the left, something closer to a formal three-box from the right. Beneath the theatre lay a serious aerodynamic brief, refining the streamlining of the 328 Touring Coupé that won the 1940 Mille Miglia. BMW built it as a one-off in 2006, on the running gear of the Z4 M Coupé.
Here it is finished in a vivid turquoise metallic, a clear cyan that turns almost icy along the highlights of the rear spats. The cabin is light grey, from the ribbed seats with their black harness straps to the steering wheel, set against a silver dashboard and console, and the gills behind the front wheels carry pale inserts to match. The red lamp strip, the frosted round headlamps either side of the kidney grille and the red tow eye are the only warm notes on the car. Built at 1:18, it sits on a grey stitched base with a black plaque bearing the BMW roundel, reading 'Limited', one of 7.
