BMW arrived at the 1940 Mille Miglia with three 328 roadsters and two closed cars, and the two coupés led from the start. When the Kamm coupé retired after seven laps, the race rested on the Touring Coupé of Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer. Von Hanstein was so set on winning that he kept putting off the agreed change of driver until, shortly before the finish, he stopped on the open road and handed the wheel to Bäumer, who took the car across the line a quarter of an hour clear of the second-placed Alfa Romeo. With the roadsters third, fifth and sixth, BMW took the team prize as well. The 2006 Mille Miglia Concept, a one-off on Z4 M Coupé running gear, is the company's tribute to that day.

This example is finished in a bright silver metallic with a lively, coarse sparkle, recalling the fine silver of the real concept. It is paired with a red cabin, the seats, steering wheel, door panels and gear lever set against a silver dashboard and console, and the red returns outside in the gill inserts and the lamp strip across the tail. The split windscreen, riveted window frames, bonnet pins and frosted round headlamps complete the picture. Built at 1:18, on a grey stitched base whose black plaque reads 'Limited', one of 7.
