Porsche's first outright win at Le Mans came in June 1970, at its 20th attempt, and it came with the red and white 917K of Porsche Salzburg. Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood shared number 23, which used the 4.5-litre version of the flat-twelve and started only 15th after brake trouble in practice. Heavy rain fell for most of the race. Number 23 covered 343 laps and won by five laps from the Martini 917L of Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen, with Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko third in a 908/02 to complete a Porsche one, two, three. Herrmann had promised his wife he would stop racing if he won, and he retired straight away.
This 917K wears the Salzburg livery as it finished: red bodywork with white bands over the nose and tail, number 23 roundels on the nose and flanks, Shell, Bosch and Goodyear decals, and yellow headlamp covers. Under the open tail frame the gearbox, twin exhausts and rear lamps are all modelled, and through the windscreen there is a red seat with a Sabelt harness, a black steering wheel and grey flocked trim. Amalgam's listing says the model was made from scan data of an original car, with paint codes and archive imagery supplied by Porsche, and that it is just over 26 cm long. It stands on a black gloss plinth whose steel plaque carries the Porsche 917 script and names both drivers and the dates, 13 and 14 June 1970. Amalgam Collection builds it at 1:18.
