On 14 June 1970 the red-and-white 917 KH of Porsche KG Salzburg gave Porsche its first overall victory at Le Mans. KH stood for Kurzheck, the short-tail body, and Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood had qualified only 15th, running the smaller 4.5-litre version of the flat-twelve. The race was decided by rain and attrition rather than outright pace: the weather changed so often that tyre stops were dictated by conditions rather than wear, and the fancied cars fell away through the night. Number 23 came home after 343 laps, ahead of the Martini 917 LH of Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen, with Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko third in a 908/02, completing a Porsche one-two-three. It was the first of the marque's many wins at the Sarthe, and it was Herrmann's last race.

This 917 carries an applied race-weathered finish that imagines the car at the end of that wet weekend: road grime fanned along the sills and flanks, the windscreen and headlamp covers dulled with dust, flecks and chips across the white nose, and the Goodyear tyres matt with dirt. Beneath it the Salzburg livery is complete, from the #23 roundels to the Shell, Bosch and Goodyear decals, and through the rear deck the flat-twelve's cooling fan can be seen. It is built at 1:12.
