Porsche showed the 911 Turbo, the type 930, at the Paris Motor Show in October 1974 and put it on sale in the spring of 1975. A 3.0-litre flat-six with a large turbocharger gave it 260 PS; flared arches front and rear covered wider tyres, and a broad rear spoiler, soon known as the whale tail, cut lift at speed. Porsche counts it the world's first series-production sports car with a turbocharger regulated by a wastegate, and in one form or another it stayed in production until 1989. Here the shape is placed in a Dubai villa district, with the city's towers rising in the haze beyond the garden walls.
The car, in a pale teal blue, sits low in the foreground on white five-spoke wheels in the Fuchs style, four round lamps across its nose and its wide hips catching the light. Behind it a white villa with deep cornices and tall windows stands among palms, and through the scrolled gold gate a pink Porsche waits on the drive. The painting is photorealist, crisp in its edges and glossy in finish, the palette held to the blues and whites of sky, car and stone, warmed by the gold of the gate. Signed by the artist at lower right, it is an original painting, one of one.
