In the 1990s McLaren offered F1 owners a High Downforce Kit, which gave a road car the look of the GTR that won Le Mans in 1995. Lanzante, the Petersfield firm behind that Le Mans winner, has revived the idea for the P1. To build a P1 HDK it strips a road car back to the bare carbon MonoCage and reworks or replaces every body panel except the bonnet. The finished car is wider than the standard P1 and carries the larger P1 GTR wing on fixed carbon pylons, louvred front wings to balance the extra downforce, GTR mirrors, GTR uprights with centre-locking wheels, and gold heat shielding in the engine bay in the manner of the F1.
This model is finished in a deep metallic copper that darkens to brown in shadow, with black carbon for the splitter, sills, diffuser and the tall rear wing. Louvres are cut into both front wings, four gold exhaust outlets sit above the finned diffuser, and the engine and rear suspension show through the open tail. Through the glass the cabin is trimmed in tan leather, with carbon on the dashboard and centre console. The car stands on a grey suede-effect base edged with red stitching, and its black plaque reads McLaren P1 HDK, 1/18 High Detail GT Series, and gives the edition as 20 pieces. It is built at 1:18.
