For its first years the 308 GT4 was not sold as a Ferrari at all. Dino was the name Maranello used for its road cars with fewer than twelve cylinders, a less expensive line intended to compete with cars such as the Porsche 911, and it honoured Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredo, known as Dino, who died in 1956. The GT4 was the first Dino with a V8 and Ferrari's first V8-engined production car. It wore Dino badges until 1976, when the prancing horse arrived on the nose, the wheels, the rear panel and the steering wheel, although the Dino 308 GT4 script stayed on the boot lid.
This model shows the car in its later form, with Ferrari badges throughout: a yellow badge on the nose, the Ferrari shield on each front wing, prancing horses on the wheel centres and a horse beside the rear lamps. The paint is a deep blue, set against a tan interior with pleated seats, a black dashboard with silver-faced instruments and a black three-spoke wheel. Each rear cluster holds three round lamps, with two pairs of tailpipes below, and the silver alloy wheels sit on black tyres. It stands on a black leather base with a stitched border, and the plaque, carrying the Ferrari shield, reads Dino 308 GT4 and Limited Edition, one of 20.
