Peter Collins came to the Nürburgring on 5 August 1956 leading the World Championship by a single point from his Ferrari team leader, Juan Manuel Fangio. In their Lancia-Ferrari D50s Fangio took pole and Collins lined up second. Collins' race lasted eight laps before a split fuel line filled his cockpit with fumes and forced him out; he took over Alfonso de Portago's car and spun off while chasing third place. Fangio won and took the championship lead, and at Monza four weeks later Collins handed his own D50 to Fangio during the Italian Grand Prix, a gesture that helped Fangio clinch his fourth world title.
CMC models Collins' car with the long nose, ringed by the green band that, by CMC's account, told it apart from Fangio's car in the pits. The engine cover lifts off and locks back in place over the 2.5-litre V8 and its pipework and wiring; bundled four-pipe exhausts exit ahead of the rear wheels, and the suspension, with a De Dion rear tube and transverse leaf springs, is made in metal. The wire wheels have stainless-steel spokes, Englebert tyres and centre-lock nuts with handed threads, and the cockpit has a leather-covered seat, a wood-rimmed wheel and a small screen. CMC builds it at 1:18 as a hand-assembled metal precision model of 1,161 parts, in a limited edition of 1,000.
