Germany's international racing colour was white, with red numbers, long before its cars turned silver in the 1930s, and a German-liveried Bugatti has a neat logic to it. When the Milan-born Ettore Bugatti founded his company at Molsheim in 1909, Alsace was part of the German Empire, and it returned to France only after the First World War. By the time the Type 35 appeared at the Grand Prix de Lyon in August 1924, Molsheim was French, and the car it produced, a 2-litre overhead-cam straight-eight in a slender, pointed body on cast alloy wheels, went on to win more than a thousand races. Its horseshoe radiator is as recognisable today as it was on the start line, and on this car it frames a white 9.
CMC's German car is white throughout, with a red 9 on the bonnet sides and tail, the white 9 in the dark radiator mesh, and plates reading IIA-0316 in the pre-war German style. The louvred bonnet lifts to show the straight-eight with its brass carburettors and copper pipework, and the spare is held to the flank in leather straps. The cockpit has an engine-turned dashboard with clock and gauges, a cord-bound wheel and a black leather seat. CMC builds it at 1:18 from more than 930 parts, in a limited edition of 800.
