The D3-generation A8 was Audi's quiet flagship, and in long-wheelbase W12 form it was the company at full stretch: a 6.0-litre twelve-cylinder under that aluminium space-frame body, sending its calm to all four wheels while the rear bench stretched out behind. This is the 2008 facelift, marked by the taller single-frame grille and full-LED daytime running strips that would soon define every Audi. It was built for the owner who wanted a limousine's space and a sports saloon's reach without the heraldry of a Maybach or an S-Class badge contest. Understatement was the whole point.
