stutz-black-hawk-special-white
Stutz Black Hawk Special, White

Frank Lockhart won the Indianapolis 500 as a rookie in 1926, and in April 1927 he averaged 160.01 mph over the mile at Muroc dry lake in one of his supercharged, intercooled Millers. For 1928 he went after the world land speed record with the Stutz Black Hawk Special, a streamliner backed by the Stutz Motor Company and powered by two supercharged 1.5-litre Miller twin-cam engines combined, about 380 hp in all. It was the smallest-displacement car ever to try for the record. At Daytona Beach his first official pass was 203.45 mph, short of the 207.552 mph Ray Keech had set earlier that year. On the return run, on 25 April 1928, the right rear tyre burst, the car tumbled across the sand and Lockhart was killed.

This model is finished in white, with its riveted wheel fairings standing clear of the body on short arms, a ribbed panel across the top of the nose and the words Stutz Black Hawk Special, Made in Indianapolis lettered on the cowl. In the narrow cockpit a brown leather headrest rises behind a wood-faced dashboard with brass-ringed MPH and RPM dials. It is set on a polished wooden base with a moulded edge and a small plaque. It was built by hand in the USA as a one-off, numbered 01 of 01.
