They were meant for the Carrera Panamericana, but that race was cancelled on safety grounds after the Le Mans disaster, and Mercedes then withdrew from motor racing at the end of the season. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who had created the coupé, took one as his company car with a large silencer added. The gullwing doors were there out of necessity, to clear the high sill beams of the spaceframe. The two cars are known as the Blue and the Red, after the colours of their upholstery, and on 5 May 2022 RM Sotheby's sold the Red at the Mercedes-Benz Museum for €135 million, the highest price ever paid for a car at the time.

Amalgam models the Blue, chassis 0007/55, in Silver Grey Metallic. The gullwing doors lift on a pale blue cabin with tartan seat facings in blue, red and white, a wood-rimmed steering wheel with polished spokes and a row of round dials. Twin chrome exhaust pipes leave through the flank, the wire wheels carry three-pointed-star spinners on Continental tyres, and W22-6962 plates are fitted at both ends. It stands on a black leather-grain base with Amalgam's plaque at the front. Amalgam builds it at 1:8, more than 53 cm long.

https://www.automotivehouse.com/products/mercedes-benz-300-slr-uhlenhaut-coupe-silver-amalgam-collection-1-8
