The all-alloy V8 displaced 2,855 cc and was fed by twin IHI turbochargers through Behr intercoolers, producing 400 bhp at 7,000 rpm, and Ferrari quoted a top speed of 189 mph. Where the 308 had its V8 mounted across the car, the GTO set it lengthways, taking up the space the 308 used as its boot, and the longer wheelbase and wider body grew around it. Ferrari took the same twin-turbocharged V8 further in the Evoluzione cars, built for a Group B racing series that was cancelled before they could compete.

Yellow is another colour the factory never used on a 288 GTO, all of which were finished in Rosso Corsa, and it changes the car's character by bringing the black details forward: the grille band with its four driving lamps, the front spoiler, the rear bumper and the thin line along each flank. The colour carries into the cabin, where the black seats have yellow pleated centres. The three slanted brake-cooling slots behind each rear wheel, the flag-style mirrors and the polished five-spoke wheels are all modelled, and two pairs of tailpipes sit beneath the tail. The tan leather base has white stitching, and its plaque, in the form of the GTO's nose with four lamps, numbers this car in an edition of 99.
