ferrari-288-gto-silver
Ferrari 288 GTO, Silver

The 288 GTO was built for a racing series that never happened. Group B rules asked for 200 road cars before a competition version could be homologated, and Ferrari planned to build exactly that number; demand ran well past the plan, and 272 were completed. What customers received was a road car shaped by competition, with a twin-turbocharged V8 mounted lengthways behind the cabin and a wider body than the 308 it grew from. Even the name looked to racing: the O in GTO stands for the Italian word for homologated, as it had on the 250 GTO of 1962.

Every 288 GTO left Maranello in Rosso Corsa, so silver is a colour the factory never offered. The metallic paint picks out the louvred bonnet vents and the three slanted slots behind each rear wheel, which cool the brakes and were carried over from the 250 GTO. Four driving lamps sit in the black grille band, flag-style mirrors stand off the doors on stalks, and polished five-spoke wheels fill the arches. At the back, two pairs of tailpipes sit below the twin round lamps. The cabin is black, with pleated seat centres. The car stands on a tan leather base with white stitching, and its plaque, shaped like the GTO's nose with its four lamps, marks the car as one of 49.
