For his letters and cards he almost always wrote in violet ink with a fountain pen, a habit he traced back to the purple copies of his father's letters, and the colour became as closely tied to him as the red of his cars. This small card, printed with a black prancing horse in one corner, carries a note in that ink, posted from Modena in April 1971, when Ferrari was 73.

In violet ink Ferrari has written Grazie e cordiali saluti, thanks and kind regards, dated the card 5/4/71 and signed it Ferrari, with the long sweeping underline of his signature. It comes with its envelope, franked the following day, 6 April 1971, by the Ferrari company meter at Modena, the red prancing horse in its frame beside the Poste Italiane 50 lire frank, and typed to Signor Roberto Merlo in Pavia. The card is crisp, with light toning and an uneven right-hand edge. The envelope is clean apart from a few stray red ink marks down its right-hand side, in the same red as the frank. Signed by Enzo Ferrari, a unique piece.

Provenance: the correspondence of Dr Roberto Merlo of Pavia, to whom the card was sent.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0821/8519/1637/files/TAH-13246-01_b3e57808-596a-4945-a372-1efdcf68c3d8.jpg?v=1793003377
