After winning the 1940 Mille Miglia, the BMW 328 Touring Coupé was lost in the confusion of the war. It resurfaced in 1945, when former BMW engineer Claus von Rücker acquired it from the US occupation forces and rebuilt it, and after he emigrated to Canada at the end of 1947 it passed to the racing driver and photographer Robert Grier. After Grier's death in the mid-1950s it spent some thirty years shut away in a garage in Wallingford, Connecticut, until Californian collector Jim Proffit restored it in the 1980s. In 2002 it returned to BMW in Munich, and four years later BMW built the Mille Miglia Concept in its honour.

This piece is finished in a very dark slate grey metallic, close to black at a glance, with a blue-green flake that comes alive along the wings and spats. Against it, an orange-tan cabin glows through the split windscreen: ribbed seats with black harness straps, tan steering wheel and door panels, and a silver dashboard and console. The same orange lines the gills behind the front wheels. Brightwork is kept to the grille surround, window frames and polished wheels, with a red lamp strip across the tail. Built at 1:18, on a grey stitched base; its black plaque reads 'Limited', one of 7.
