auto-union-typ-c-1936-4
Auto Union Typ C, 1936 #4

Ferdinand Porsche designed Auto Union's Grand Prix cars with the engine behind the driver, and the Typ C of 1936 carried the idea furthest: a supercharged V16 of six litres, giving up to 520 PS at 5,000 rpm, with the fuel tank placed centrally behind the driver so that the car's balance hardly changed as the fuel burned off. That season belonged to Bernd Rosemeyer. He won the Eifelrennen, the German, Swiss and Italian Grands Prix and the Coppa Acerbo, and took the European Championship, the only drivers' title Auto Union ever won. At the Nürburgring in July and at Bremgarten in August his car carried the number 4, and both times he brought it home first.

This example is finished clean, in satin silver with the red 4 on the nose and on each flank. Body panels lift away to show the radiator and the V16, its plug leads, pipework and rows of exhaust stubs all modelled. The cockpit has a full set of dials, a cloth seat and a steering wheel with a textured tan rim, and the wire wheels carry knock-off hubs marked Rechte Seite and treaded Continental tyres. It stands on a brushed metal base with drilled edges and the Auto Union rings at the front. The engraving on the base reads 'Auto Union Type C 1936', 'Limited Edition', one of 25, and 'Made in Hungary by Fabri Design'.
